Reverse Mentoring

 Reverse Mentoring

So as an older gamer and fan of movies, TV and music just  to name a few things I have had several conversations in the past weeks with people my age and older. One of the things that has come up is talking about likes among "our" generation and the "younger" generation. One thing I pointed out that has seemed to resonate strongly is that it is up to us, the older more experienced group to introduce our future fans to what we like and why. I don't expect everyone to like English folk Metal but at least giving someone a chance to experience it or comics, anime or whatever helps carry on the torch of widening experiences. Watching howl's Moving castle and sharing my DVD with a former co-worker meant more to me because now i have reached out to share something I like with the potential they may like it too.

On the flip side I have gotten to know about different places to eat, music, movies etc from those younger and from various backgrounds. I feel more enriched even if I don't like something because I can hold a conversation and agree to disagree.

In the corporate world they do something called reverse mentoring, this is where a more tech savvy younger person is teemed up with an older more old school adult and they exchange experiences and knowledge. The older adult may have technical know how that is only gained from years of experience while the younger person has learned newer ways that are more efficient , say in writing reports, research, communicating across different platforms and so on. I got the chance to learn from someone a few years older than me but had 35 years in the print field. They got to learn about digital manipulation, pre press and graphic design plus my years of digital printing. We made a great team!

Thanks for now,
